TERKINI #LahadDatu !

NBI preparing charges vs Kiram, men

MANILA - The Department of Justice (DOJ) has directed the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to prepare "airtight"cases against Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III and his men for the ongoing standoff in Sabah, Malaysia.

This comes as Kiram called for a unilateral ceasefire with Malaysian security forces at noontime today.

Speaking to reporters this morning, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the NBI is now on case build-up against Kiram and his men.

"Ang focus ngayon ng imbestigasyon ng NBI, which is, actually, a priority of the NBI, is to determine the charges and mga ebidensya kinakalap na, charges in violation of Philippine laws. So gang ginagawa natin," she said.

De Lima had earlier announced that Kiram's group may be charged with violation of Article 118 (inciting to war or giving motives for reprisals) of the Revised Penal Code, illegal possession of firearms, violations of the election gun ban, and illegal assembly, among others.

Kiram's group may be turned over to Malaysia

After they shall have been made accountable under Philippine laws, the DOJ will also study the possibility of allowing the Malaysian government to extradite the Sultanate's "Royal Army" for violations of Malaysian laws.

"If lumabag din sila sa mga batas ng Malaysia, pag-uusapan yan later if pwede rin sila ibalik doon to face the charges. I supposed they violated also Malaysian laws yung possession nga lang ng firearms. Pag-aaralan din natin yung extradition. Wala naman tayong extradition treaty [with Malaysia] but there might be some mechanisms," she said.

Some 200 of Kiram's men went to Lahad Datu on February 12 to "settle peacefully in their homeland." The Sulu Sultanate is laying claim to Sabah, previously known as North Borneo.
